September's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year...

The Last September are such a nice group of people we will forgive you for maybe overlooking them because they don’t use stupid, irritating gimmicks to get facebook ‘likes’. That, however is all we will allow you to get away with. So if you haven’t already and don’t have the 'being annoyed at shite promo campaigns' excuse then WHY ARE YOU NOT LISTENING TO THEM!?

The Last September are an excellent collective of musicians whose music sort of bridges the gap between bits of the Doves, Keane and Mercury Rev. (Yes, Keane do have good bits we’re not ashamed to admit it, unlike you at the back there cowering under your NME subscription hairspray ya plank). Where there is such a clear mix of musical influences and indeed instrumentation there is always the possibility that the music produced will sound either ridiculous or complete rubbish. Thankfully the partnership of Pete Deane’s lyrics and clever instrumentation mean none of these outcomes have arisen, thank god. The band has a long history, having returned in 2010 from a five year hiatus they essentially re-started the music making process with fantastic results. The main bulk of which was 2011’s release As the Crow Flies which you can get your ears round HERE. And this is where you can also purchase it if you like listening to music via something called a stereo.

On top of sounding good, they are a band who appears to actually CARE about the artwork which adorns their musical output. Now, for people who think THIS is good artwork it’s time to close the browser page and get back to loitering on street corners.

Avert your eyes if you will, to exhibit A:

Nice to look at, lets the owner make up their own mind as to what the story may be behind it. Well done The Last September.

Exhibit B:

SACK ALL INVOLVED.

So far, so good. Even better, their new single This City is out 5 March as a free download. This particular release will coincide with some live dates which we strongly suggest you go and watch – they gave you the single free after all, only fair... Plus This City is accompanied by a video featuring the scenes of our beloved Edinburgh; gold stars all round.

Blow the bloody doors ahff...

It is fair to say that rock outfit Blow are still in their early stages where buying copies of their music is concerned. However, in terms of gigging like mad, actually enjoying gigging like mad and putting an actual effort into finding their sound their way ahead in the race. However, some biography and background for us to steal and re-word would have been grand, Blow don’t do that sort of thing you see so we are now about to make one up - feel free to steal it and re-word it for your own purpose boys.

So, Edinburgh based and gigging Blow are a three-piece mainly rock based outfit and are very promising. If you listened to them on Spotify (you can’t listen to them on Spotify so don’t hover over the word getting your hopes up for a link) it would helpfully suggest ‘related’ artists you may like. We imagine this list would consist of: Muse, Placebo, Joy Division, Red Hot Chili Peppers, T.Rex, The Libertines, Audioslave and Kasabian. If you can’t stand any of these bands either alone or as a mish-mash of sound we strongly suggest you just give up reading any further because you’ll be disappointed, maybe even annoyed and it’ll get awkward. If, however you DO indeed like the sounds coming out of any of those suggested ‘similar artists’ then click HERE and listen to Blow on their Soundcloud collection. Pretty good eh? (Well BLOW me, their great! etcetc) Our current favourites are Choice and Bad Assassin.

This is Blow, playing a t-shirts optional event...

These lads do it all themselves and in some cases it shows in their recordings but they certainly aren’t bad, sure the sound could be reigned in at some points and evened out a bit but that all comes with experience and re-records. It’s not like their charging for these recordings up online – if you love a freebie and good music, do download the Soundcloud MP4s. Yes, MP4s don’t open automatically in iTunes blah blah blah stop complaining and start listening. If you DO want to support them by maybe throwing some money at their musical cause then like their Facebook page HERE and you’ll get all the gig and general band updates you need. Plus, they never over-clog your newsfeed with useless and shite musings which is nice of them isn’t it?

They tick all our boxes, let’s hope they tick yours.

The sly fox of the 'Burgh

Listening blindfolded to Becca Fox you’d be forgiven for thinking she is America’s latest RnB based songstress with a bunch of record company money behind her. But NO she’s genuine, home-grown and not to forget extremely hardworking talent. You don’t get recordings like Dangerous, her first official single release by sitting on your arse all day hoping the storyline of Coyote Ugly is actually true and the billion dollar contracts just gonna chap on your door... You can listen to that here by the way.

This is a picture of Becca, holding up a door frame. We like to think she's the sort of nice girl who would do that for someone struggling to keep their door up.

If sleek, harmless pop isn’t your bag don’t write Ms.Fox off quite yet she can do acoustic too – yes she can actually sing! (ROUND OF APPLAUSE). Check out her YouTube channel for this action with covers ranging from The Script to Pixie Lott as well as live performances of original work. We beg you to take a listen without either falling head over heels or at least enjoying it slightly... there’s no way anyone with ears could outright DISLIKE her voice and tunes, at the worst you might just hate singer-songwriters from Edinburgh named Becca. In that case you’ll never be convinced. Plus, over 1000 Facebook fans can’t be wrong.

Anyway back to the good stuff – Becca is currently unsigned (WE DON’T KNOW WHY) and describes herself as soul, acoustic, RnB and soul however we’re sticking with our Popular RnB definition for the moment. Hailing from Edinburgh she regularly plays live in both the capital and Glasgow so if you ever get the chance we highly recommend you go and see her, we’ve seen her play live and spent the performance asking WHY SOMEONE isn’t just throwing ten grand at her and seeing what happens. With all the sass of Beyonce but the writing potential of Lauryn Hill, this girls one to look out for on your travels and if you don’t travel at least make the effort to download her bloody stuff eh? An action which you can do here - go on, you've been illegally downloading for years ONE 79p purchase won't hurt you.

Feed the Fish Commandments.

Hello All, and welcome to the first (of many) posts from Feed the Fish. Before you decide to become a massive fan of ours you may want to read on and discover what our intentions are then, obviously become a regular visitor.

The 9 and a half Steps...

1) Feed the Fish intend to purvey fantastic music from the depths of Edinburgh with the intention of showing it off. So if you hate music or indeed, Scottish capitals the following blog isn't for you.

2) Feed the Fish is a friendly place, if you send us music we will listen. However, it may not necessarily be published.

3) Feed the Fish will not give the time of day to any artist who thinks they are Bono before they've even reached Larry Mullen Jr. standard. By this, we mean CALM DOWN we only want to write a little bit about then listen to, nice musicians and their nice music, we're not OK magazine.

4) We like bringing you a weekly featured solo artist or band from the glorious city of Edinburgh in the hope you listen, like and (possibly) buy or go to a gig.

5) Don’t bother conversing with us if one week you are an indie band and the next you’ve gone heavy metal. Choose what you like and stick with it but don’t bore us about living on the edge (of your granny’s castle and estate).

6) We are aware that there are other cities outside of Edinburgh, but for the time-being we might be a little biased in our musical findings. But hey, nobody is forcing you to like us eh?

7) Feed the Fish work on a “Nae Pint , Nae Good” music policy. If we don’t feel we’d enjoy a pint with you as well as enjoy the audio output, then a part of our soul dies. Sorry, we just can’t bring ourselves to like your music if we don’t like you.

8) Feed the Fish takes a dislike to artists who say things just for the sake of it. “I don’t listen to CDs, their too mainstream” isn’t our bag. GET A GRIP BIFFY CLYRO HAVE STARTED SELLING RECORDS WHO CARES?!

9) Feed the Fish is all about the music, the chat and the down-right cheek, it’d be impossible to comment on the music industry without having a sense of humour. Come join us you miserable Morrissey loving b*stards!

9 and a half) Feed the Fish does not intend to ruin lives, careers or anyone else’s fun.

Are we clear? Let’s get started.
